The Grand Union canal lies at the very heart of our community. It is a unique part of our history and is a beautiful but untapped feature in our area.
The town centre action group has joined forces with the Hayes Town Partnership (which includes British Waterways and Hillingdon Council) to examine ways to make the canal a real attractive and well used asset.
We've talked to the Council about opening up the canal for view from the road bridge, and the Council's response is outlined in the "Yiewsley canal bridge" page under the "projects" header on this site. We think this is a very importsnt first step.
As part of the next steps in our project we are axamining what can be done with the whole stretch of canal from the Kingston Lane foobridge in the east to the Water's edge pub in the west. We would like to maximise opportunities from the new developments from Trout Road heading toward Cowley. We'd like particular focus on the sections around the high street interfaces, and would like potentially to link the project to the arts in spaces project and the other high street development projects. We would like as a mininum to improve the hardstandings to amek this strecth safe, but we#d also like to look at installing lighting at various points, and to see what iconic features or services that could be utilised to make the canal vibrant to our community and to visitors. we'd like the canal to work for all of us here in Yiewsley and West Drayton.
We are very keen to hear ideas on the canal work - if you have any thoughts please do post them below, or alternatoively get in touch at ywdsitemaker@hotmail.com.

My husband and I are moving to the area shortly and are very much looking forward to long strolls along the tow path
I would love to go down the canal and walk it however it needs clear signs, even the map doesnt really help, lights and cctv, so that people can feel safe when walking.
I took a walk along the canal the path the other day, it was very enjoyable. The path needs some attention and I wondered if the New Tesco will improve the canal side or will it just block it out? Just past Cowley Park is the lock where there is a lovely cafe. I had a very good full English breakfast. I do not know what the waterways regulations are but supervised canoeing for youngsters could be fun.
